People & Portrait Miscats

This week I watched People & Portraits closely and noticed, that some of the category are swamped with miscats. There were certain pages where I had to move 50 our of 120 deviations, because they were not placed correctly.

Here are categories that caused most trouble:

:bulletred: Fashion Portraits - ~10% miscats
Most of the miscats were either Glamour Portraits and Close Ups. No fashion in the picture, no fashion shot! ;) It's really quite simple.

:bulletred: Glamour Portrais - ~38% miscats (!)
This is a professional cat and is therefore to be used by people with a deep knowledge of the medium. You do not have to be a professional to submit to this category, however we will be quite strict when it comes to low quality. Good knowledge of light and (at least semi-) prefessional equipment is necesarry. I also found loads of concert shots in this category which belong into Photojournalism > Concerts & Musicians. No prom-photos! It takes more than a glamourous dressed person to make a Glam shot!

:bulletred: Pin Up - ~27% miscats
The miscats in here are pretty random at times and it makes me wonder if people just click on Pin Up by mistake as I can't find any conncetion many times. I found disturbingly many pictures of children in here!

:bulletred: Spontaneous Portraits - ~35% miscats
Most people confuse this category with Photojournalism. Spontaneous portraits are mostly staged shots and do not have a documentary purpose.

:bulletred: Self-Portraits - 15% miscats
Not every picture that has the photographer him/herself in the picture automatically qualifies for this category. Snapshots with webcams and cell-phones are usually of very low quality and need to go to scraps. We're looking for planned and artistic pictures here.

:bulletred: Closeups - 15% miscats
Photographs with most of the model's body visible are NOT closeups. Also, closeups of your cats and dogs are not portraits, they have to go to (guess!) Cats & Dogs.

:bulletred: PLEASE REMEMBER, SNAPSHOTS of all kinds belong to SCRAPS ONLY!

As you can see the amount of miscats are massive and it's impossible for us to move everything. We're working on a new description system and hope to raise awareness. If you find miscats please do not hesitate to report them via the "Report Policy Violation" link located under every deviation.

In case one of your submissions gets moved please check the gallery description before you file a help desk ticket. In 90% of the cases you will be able to figure out yourself why a deviation got moved.

Highlights of the past week in the above mentioned categories - 100% correctly posted

Info on Daily Deviations

TYPICAL REASONS WHY PHOTOS DO NOT GET FEATURED
  • Poor or snapshot quality (not in focus, pixels apparent, etc.)

    • Lack of originality (Cliché!)

      • Colors that defy the physics of light (i.e. too much Photoshop editing)

        • The deviant just received or is about to receive a Daily Deviation from myself or one of the other Gallery Directors

          • The deviant has had 4 or more Daily Deviations already

            • The deviation is categorized as a photomanipulation!

STRENGTHS FOR WHICH WE LOOK IN POTENTIAL FEATURES
  • Originality and singular vision (it's great when a photographer can show you how she or he sees the world)
    • Photographs that rely on the technical merits of the photo to succeed (rather than relying primarily on photomanipulation)
      • Analog or digital fine art photography as long as the quality is high!

Photography is Alive and Well and Living on the Daily Features Page!

Have a nice week.
